The Washington County Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition, Inc. celebrated their "Sex Has Consequences" Ad and Film Contest on May 2, 2007 with an awards ceremony at the Maryland Theatre. The contest was for local youth ages 13 to 21 years old to create print ads, 30-second public service announcements and short films with the theme "Sex Has Consequences." The goals of the Ad and Film Contest were to raise awareness in Washington County about teen pregnancy and its consequences; to change attitudes and values regarding teen pregnancy; and to encourage parent and child communication about sexuality, reproductive health and the risks of teen pregnancy. Over 130 entries were submitted by local youth that were then judged by a panel of teens and then by a panel of media experts and Coalition members. The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy organization in Washington, D.C. also participated on the judging panels.

Robbie Soto, a senior at North Hagerstown High School and a member of the Coalition's Teen Advisory Group (TAG) was Master of Ceremony at the Wednesday evening event. The program consisted of an overview of the history of the Ad and Film Contest by Carrol Lourie, Coalition Coordinator and a talk about the importance of involving youth in media messages by Chris Copley, Assistant Lifestyle Editor with the Herald-Mail Company. Nathan Hesse, Tryee Sterling and Greg Dahbura and Company entertained attendees with various forms of music. The top ten print ad entries were displayed; the top six 30-second public service announcements and the short film were viewed. Prizes were awarded to the top three entries in each category. First place winners received a prize of $1,000.00, second place $500.00 and third place $250.00.

The winners in the print ad category were: Lindsey Schutte, First Place (click here to view); Kristina Fraley, Second Place (click here to view); and, Dani Ward, Third Place (click here to view). The winners in the 30-second public service announcements were: Adam Taylor, First Place; John Proctor, Second Place; and, Alison Ivosevich, Third Place. The short film entry winner was Rowan Copley.

The Washington County Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition was formed in March 2005 to respond to our community's teen pregnancy crisis as Washington County has the fourth highest teen birth rate in Maryland. While the National and State births to teens are dropping, Washington County's is not. The Coalition's mission is to reduce teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections by educating youth to make healthy choices. The Coalition was very impressed with the number and quality of the entries submitted and believes that the Ad and Film Contest did in fact help in raising the community's awareness about our teen pregnancy problem in the County.

    "Families Finding Voices"
May Is Mental Health Month Activity

In recognition of May Mental Health Month, the Washington County Community Partnership for Children & Families (WCCP), the Washington County Mental Health Authority, Inc. (WCMHA), The Family Network and a recent Family Leadership Institute graduate planned a public awareness effort. A booth was set up at Halfway Park Days, which is an annual event held by the Lions Club at Marty Snook Park in Hagerstown where the majority of booths set up are for vendors selling crafts. The Family Network, community mental health providers and parents of children with special needs worked together to have someone present in the booth over the two-day event to hand out resources and Mental Health Month awareness materials. One mental health provider present expressed her surprise with the number of people who requested information.

Information Shared on Behalf of the Maryland Coalition of Families for Children's Mental Health

The Maryland Coalition of Families for Children's Mental Health is excited to announce the 4th Annual Child and Adolescent Mental Health Conference: Connecting Families and Youth with Evidence-Based Practice, Practice-Based Evidence and Promising Practices to be held on June 5-6, 2007 at the Sheraton Columbia Hotel. This conference is supported by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Mental Hygiene Administration, University of Maryland Mental Health Services Training Center, Maryland Child and Adolescent Mental Health Institute, Maryland Coalition of Families for Children's Mental Health, Maryland Mental Health Transformation Grant and the Maryland State Department of Education.

The State of Maryland is committed to supporting and implementing Evidence-Based Practices (EBPs), Practice-Based Evidence (PBE) and Promising Practices (PPs) in Children's Mental Health. This 4th Annual Child and Adolescent Mental Health Conference is celebrating Maryland's achievements in this effort by sharing resources and knowledge in the development of a statewide implementation to improve the quality of services and eventual outcomes for children, adolescents and their families receiving behavioral health services in Maryland.

We are anticipating participation from about 300 stakeholders from the child serving system. Attendees include administrators (state and local), program directors, providers, consumers and family members and advocates. This conference will help families and professionals to gain knowledge and skills regarding effective practices. Workshops and general sessions will allow participants to examine EBPs, PBEs and PPs and how to build the infrastructure that will support implementation into the community. Sessions will also focus on various treatment modalities, promising approaches in youth and family engagement and systems transformation.

This conference will cost $60.00 for both days, $40.00 for one day only, and a discounted registration for family members and consumers.

You will be able to submit an online payment with a credit card as part of this registration process. If you would prefer, you can also pay by check. Please make all checks out to Baltimore Mental Health Systems. You can mail the check in advance of the conference to: Attn: Peggie Butler-Watson, Training Center, 3700 Koppers Street, Suite 402, Baltimore, MD 21227 or bring the check to the conference and pay when you register onsite.

The conference will be held at the Sheraton Columbia Hotel, 10207 Wincopin Circle, Columbia, Maryland, 21044; 410-730-3900.

    About Us

The Washington County Community Partnership for Children & Families (WCCP) is a State of Maryland Local Management Board (LMB) Initiative. LMBs in each jurisdiction promote an interagency, collaborative approach to serving children that involves all stakeholders, parents and families in the process. This collaborative effort ensures a more effective system of care for youth and families across a continuum of services from prevention to intervention to aftercare. LMBs represent no single perspective but, rather, convene a community's public and private partners to address the needs of the "whole child" through collaboration, coordination, community and capacity-building. Fundamentally, LMBs bring communities together to better serve children and their families. LMBs not only focus on services for children with intensive needs but focus on services for all children in their jurisdictions. LMBs do not provide direct service - instead, they work through partnerships with local and regional providers to maximize and leverage resources for positive results for children in every jurisdiction in Maryland.
